Our Club

The Club has run annually since 1990 and is affiliated to the national Young Archaeologists Club to which our members are encouraged to join. We are insured for all activities and events. The Club is run by volunteers and is funded by grant giving bodies while the base and facilities are provided by Biggar Museum. We emphasise activity based sessions and where possible fieldwork.

YAC will start up after the winter break on Wed 9th March 2005

Projects

Normally, a new project is chosen for each session, for 2004 spring, the theme title was British Archaeology, and we made take home clay models of sites such as Stonehenge, Skara Brae, stone circles, chambered tombs and lots more. During the session we learned about the sites we were modelling. The autumn session was ‘Writing Through The Ages’ using our own in house Writing Project kit. Each evening a chronological journey through time was progressed with different types of writing from cuneiform to computers.

Past projects

Principal past projects have been:

Cut out model making, castles, churches, Roman forts etc.

Writing Through The Ages.

Egyptians.

Romans.

Pre-History.

The World of Trees.

Civilisations of the World.

Carved Stone Balls.

Simulated Digs.

The Archaeology of Britain

Other activities

Each year we do ploughed field walking, looking for flints and pottery.

Occasionally there is the chance to excavate and go on field trips. Our Club members have participated in excavations of most periods and have been responsible for discovering Stone Age sites.

Each year we do ‘hands on’ activities such as flint knapping, candle making, making fire by bow drills and strike a lights.

We have object-handling kits that include, Pre-history, Romans, Medieval, 19th Century and Writing Through The Ages.

Spring session 2005

The topic for this session will be ‘Homes Through The Ages’ we shall learn about homes from all over the world, from caves to space stations. Model making will form part of each weekly meeting.

Conditions

The Club is FREE and open to anyone. From 2004, and to comply with the law, we require that an adult or family member must accompany anyone under the age of eight. Otherwise there are no age limits. We do ask that parents take a turn at staying for an evening to help with supervision.

The Club is run in association with the Young Archaeologist Club and is insured by them, while facilities are provided by Biggar Museums.
